"Giggy Argo's simple set of gold screens provides a warm backdrop as the night draws in, the footlights turn up and Iago's plot to destroy the Moor gets under way....Barr's production is based on an abridged version of Shakespeare's sixth-longest play, which breaks the work down to its major set pieces and throws out minor characters such as Iago's accomplice, Roderigo, and Michael Cassio's lover, the prostitute Bianca...Matthew Wade, a newcomer to Barr's ensemble, brings a graceful boyishness and a light tenor voice to the role of the Moor. Even if Wade doesn't yet have the agility with the Bard's language to carry off some of the more knotty speeches, the sunny ingenuousness of his characterisation makes a fitting contrast to the duality and brooding malice of Iago and goes some way to explain the Moor's dependency on the older man. Though you have to suspend your disbelief somewhat to imagine this Othello as a great leader of men, there's something touching about his descent from golden boy to broken and incomprehending wretch." ~ Allan Radcliffe, The Times, 28 June 2013, in Theatre Record 2013, Issue 13
